Post-poll violence case: CBI questions TMC leader Debraj Chakraborty

Debraj Chakraborty, the spouse of Trinamool MLA Aditi Munsi from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency, was interrogated by the CBI in connection with a purported case of post-poll violence. Sources indicate that Debraj Chakraborty, who serves as a Trinamool councillor and holds the position of mayor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation council, presented himself before CBI officials at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake at 11 am on Tuesday. The questioning, lasting for two hours, focused on Chakraborty’s potential involvement, even though he was not initially named in the FIR related to the case. His inclusion in the investigation prompted the CBI to conduct an inquiry.

Reports suggest that Debraj Chakraborty is being probed in connection with the demise of Prasenjit Das, a BJP worker discovered hanging near his residence in Dum Dum Park during the first week of May, following the announcement of the Assembly election results. While Chakraborty, serving as the president of Trinamool Youth Congress’ Dum Dum and Barrackpore units, was not mentioned in the initial FIR, his association with the case emerged during subsequent investigations.

In response to the Calcutta High Court’s directive to investigate post-poll violence in West Bengal, the CBI initiated a case of abetment to suicide against nine individuals, including two personnel from the Baguiati police station. The victim’s mother had filed a complaint with a magistrate, leading to the registration of the case by the CBI. Debraj Chakraborty, expressing cooperation with the CBI’s investigation, maintains his involvement in the ongoing inquiry.
